Treatment-resistant schizophrenia is a common and vexing therapeutic challenge. During a fascinating interview on ReachMD with Dr. Nicola Cascella, an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, I learned of a pioneering new approach. Dr. Cascella had success with one patient by applying neuromodulation therapy--specifically deep brain stimulation of the substantial nigra pars reticulata.
